Why we use homestays?

As you can imagine thousands of trekkers from all over the world pass through Nepal each year on their way to the upper Himalayas where hotels are expensive because of supply & demand. These hotels are the same as the ones in Kathmandu & Pokhara & owned by the richer people in Nepal who can afford to live a very comfortable life. And as you can imagine international tourism is big business in Nepal bringing in millions each year which is spent usually on the trekking routes with the majority of the money going to the richer businesses based in Kathmandu.

But having spent a lot of time in rural Nepal I know there is a whole new world waiting for these visitors to visit and experience that maybe not provides the thrill of trekking through the Himalayas or seeing the top of Mount Everest for the first time. But it comes very close with the chance of hiking through valleys laden with history, walking by locals working in the villages trying to make a living or just simply trying to have a conversation with a person who speaks little English just to pass the time of day.

One of the homestays we use in Kathmandu

You add the amazing hiking ground, the viewing points to see north into the Himalayas, the fantastic hospitality & even better home cooked food and at a fraction of the price of trekking its well worthwhile. And best of all you will be supporting homestays set up by ordinary people in Nepal who want nothing more than to run their own business in the areas they were raised in. Forward thinking people who know that by building infrastructure in rural areas it will not just uplift their families but also the whole area. Though as a guest in one of the homestays I have to admit it gives you chance to experience Nepali culture (if your lucky a festival will be on while your there) proper home cooked food and why Nepali hospitality is known throughout the world as one of the best. My dream ever since the first days of being in this amazing country was to try and do something to allow people to experience what I have in my travels around Nepal. And by setting up Hiking4fun it will give international visitors the opportunity to visit such areas.
